Day 3: Machu Picchu – Cusco
Machu Picchu Excursion
Your adventure at Machu Picchu begins with a choice of transportation from Aguas Calientes, and the day kicks off early at 4 am with a scrumptious breakfast at your Aguas Calientes hotel. You have two options to reach Machu Picchu’s main gate:
Option 1: Hiking
- Start your hike from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu at around 4:30 am. Begin by walking from your hotel to Puente Ruinas, a journey of approximately 30 minutes.
- At Puente Ruinas, the initial checkpoint, you’ll need to present your Machu Picchu tickets and original passports for entry.
- After clearing the Puente Ruinas checkpoint, commence your uphill trek to Machu Picchu, encompassing around 1,700 steps. Typically, this ascent takes between one to one and a half hours.
- Upon reaching Machu Picchu’s main gate, you’ll rendezvous with your group and guide to gain entry to the site, embarking on an unforgettable exploration of the ancient Inca citadel.
Option 2: Bus Ride
- Opt for the bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. You can purchase your bus ticket in town, either on the evening before or on the same morning. Each one-way bus ticket costs $12.
- Join the queue to board the first buses departing from Aguas Calientes at 5:30 am. The bus journey takes around 30 minutes to reach Machu Picchu.
- Upon arriving at Machu Picchu, meet up with your group and guide around 6 am to enter the site and commence your exploration of the remarkable Inca city.
MACHU PICCHU GUIDED TOUR:
Your program includes a Machu Picchu ticket, with primary circuit options being circuit 01 or 02. Please check details here: [link]. If availability for the first choice is limited, circuit 03 or 04 will be included. Ticket availability depends on your booking time, so booking well in advance is recommended for the primary circuit options. For more information on different circuits and ticket details, please visit our website or contact us directly.
Upon reaching Machu Picchu, an experienced tour guide will lead you on a 2.5-hour guided exploration of the Inca city, following the circuit outlined in your ticket. The guide will provide insights into the history and significance of Machu Picchu, allowing time for photographs and taking in the breathtaking views. The tour includes visits to the most iconic locations within the site.
After the guided tour, you’ll have some free time to explore and relax independently. If you’ve arranged to hike Huayna Picchu (which must be booked in advance, as it’s a popular option that sells out quickly and costs $60 per person), your guide will direct you to the starting point. The hike typically takes no more than 2 hours for the round-trip.
Alternatively, you can opt for the Machu Picchu Mountain hike instead of Huayna Picchu. This hike is more challenging and takes a minimum of three hours for the round-trip, with an additional cost of $60 per person.
For those considering either of the mountain climbs, we recommend choosing the train return to Cusco to allow more time to explore the mountains. If you prefer to return by car, we suggest extending your stay in Aguas Calientes for an additional night and departing by car on the sixth day from the Hydroelectric station. This will provide ample time to fully experience the beauty of the mountains and make the most of your journey.
After immersing yourself in the wonders of Machu Picchu and exploring its surroundings, it’s time to make your way back to Cusco. We offer two convenient options for your return journey: by car or by train.
Option 1: Return by Car
- Begin your walk from Machu Picchu to Hidroelectrica around 10:30 am. This trek typically takes 3 to 3.5 hours to complete.
- It’s essential to reach Hidroelectrica by 2:00 pm to catch the car, which is scheduled to depart at 2:30 pm. The car journey from Hidroelectrica to Cusco takes around 6 hours, and you can expect to arrive in Cusco at approximately 9:30 pm. Upon arrival, you’ll be dropped off in Cusco’s city center.
Option 2: Return by Train
- If you choose to return to Cusco by train after visiting Machu Picchu, you have two ways to get to Aguas Calientes.
- You can either walk down for 1.5 hours or take a 30-minute bus ride, which costs $12.
- Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you’ll have time to explore the town and have lunch before returning to your hotel to gather your belongings and head to the train station.
- The train to Ollantaytambo is available at either 2:30 pm or 2:55 pm, depending on availability. The journey takes 1.5 hours and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.
- Upon arriving in Ollantaytambo, a transfer arranged by Machu Picchu Reservations or with your name on it will be waiting to take you back to Cusco. This is a 2-hour journey, with an arrival time of around 6:30 pm, and you’ll be dropped off in Cusco’s city center.
