Inca Jungle 4 days tour itinerary

Cusco – Santa Maria (Downhill Biking)

Pick up at your hotel at 7:00 a.m., followed by a trip to Ollantaytambo, where we will stop for breakfast. Then, we will continue by vehicle for 3 hours until we reach the starting point of the cycling route known as the “Airport”. During the trip, we will pass through the Abra Malaga at 4,316 meters above sea level. At the “airport”, you will receive safety instructions from the guide and you will be provided with the necessary equipment for this activity. We will begin the descent by bicycle, which will take 3 hours (55 km) to the village of Huamanmarca. Then, we will head to the village of Santa Maria in a 30-minute drive, where we will enjoy our first lunch. We will spend the first night in basic lodging. During the trip, we will experience the beauty of the snow-capped peaks and a rapid change from a dry and cold climate to a warm and humid one. Once in Santa Maria, you will have the option of rafting class III and IV (additional activity) on the Urubamba River, which runs through this part of the jungle.

Santa Maria – Santa Teresa (Trekking)

After a delicious breakfast, at approximately 6:30 a.m., we will begin our first day of trekking to Santa Teresa. The first two hours will be an ascent, with several stops to learn about the rich flora and fauna of the area. One of the stops will be at a family home, where we will rest for about 20 minutes and can stock up on water and local tropical fruits. Later, we will cross a section of the Inca Trail that used to connect the sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu with the town of Vilcabamba. Here, the guide will explain the history of the Incas and their communication system of the time. From here, we will enjoy the most impressive views of the Huancarccasa canyon and then descend to the village of Quellomayo, where we will stop for lunch. After a delicious lunch and a rest in the hammocks, we will continue with the last 2 hours of hiking to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo, where we will have time to enjoy this special place. Then, we will head to our final destination, the town of Santa Teresa, where we will spend the second night in a basic accommodation.

Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes (Zip Line or Canopy – optional)

After breakfast, around 7:00 a.m., we will start our hike to the town of Aguas Calientes. First, we will walk for 3 hours through the Aobamba valley until we reach the sector known as Intihuatana, where we will pass through a small governmental control. Then, we will continue to Inka Rakay, where we will enjoy our lunch. On this trek, we will see several waterfalls and have the opportunity to admire the majestic Machu Picchu and Haynapicchu mountains, as well as the Intihuatana or sundial at the top of the mountain and other constructions of the Inca city of Machu Picchu. The last 3 hours of trekking will be along the railway line to the town of Aguas Calientes.

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco

On this day, you will have two options to visit Machu Picchu: 1) Continue walking for approximately 1.5 hours on a steep path with stairs until you reach the entrance of the citadel, 2) Buy a bus ticket that costs $12 to go up or $24 to go up and down. Once in Machu Picchu, at 2,490 meters above sea level, you will enjoy a guided tour of approximately 2 hours and then you will have enough time to explore the citadel on your own. During this time, you will be able to visit the Inti Punku (Sun Gate).

After the visit to Machu Picchu, you will return to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch. You will find numerous restaurants where you can choose according to your preferences. After lunch, you will take a train that will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to Ollantaytambo station, where a transport will be waiting for you with your name to take you back to the city of Cusco, in a trip that will last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
