Short Inca Trail 1 day (Express Hike)

Short on time but still dreaming of walking the legendary Inca Trail? The 1 Day Inca Trail Hike is the perfect way to experience this iconic route without committing to the full 4-day trek.

This unforgettable journey covers approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) along the final stretch of the Classic Inca Trail. Along the way, you’ll hike through beautiful cloud forest scenery, pass impressive Inca ruins, and follow ancient stone paths that once connected the vast Inca Empire.

The highlight of the day is arriving at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) — the original entrance used by the Incas — where you’ll enjoy your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu from above. It’s the same dramatic viewpoint that multi-day trekkers reach after days on the trail.

Please note that with the 1-day Inca Trail permit, access is limited to the upper panoramic section of Machu Picchu. This allows you to take the classic postcard photos from above, but it does not include a full guided circuit inside the archaeological site. After enjoying the views, you’ll exit the park and head down to Aguas Calientes before returning to Cusco by train.

If you’re looking for adventure, history, and one of the most iconic views in the world — all in a single day — this hike is for you.

Early Morning Departure from Cusco

Your adventure begins at 4:00 am with hotel pick-up in Cusco. We travel by private transportation to Ollantaytambo, where we board the early train that follows the Urubamba River to Km 104, the official starting point of the 1-Day Inca Trail.

Start of the Hike – Walking the Original Inca Trail

At Km 104, we begin our hike along original Inca stone paths. The trail gradually ascends through beautiful cloud forest landscapes, offering impressive views of the Andes and the Sacred Valley.

After several hours of hiking, we arrive at the remarkable archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive Inca complexes along the route. Here, we take a break and enjoy our box lunch surrounded by stunning scenery.

Cloud Forest and Wildlife

As we continue toward Machu Picchu, we hike through lush vegetation filled with orchids, native plants, and colorful birdlife. With some luck, we may spot wildlife such as viscachas or even the Andean spectacled bear.

Arrival at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)

In the afternoon, we reach the legendary Sun Gate, the original entrance used by the Incas to access Machu Picchu. From this viewpoint, you will enjoy your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu from above — one of the most iconic moments of the entire trek.

Panoramic Visit of Machu Picchu

After taking in the view at the Sun Gate, we continue hiking for approximately 45 minutes to reach Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, we explore the upper panoramic sector (Circuit 1), stopping at the best viewpoints to capture classic photos. This section is often less crowded in the afternoon, allowing for a more peaceful experience.

Descent to Aguas Calientes

After finishing our visit, we take the bus down to Aguas Calientes. You will have free time to relax and enjoy dinner (not included).

Train Return to Cusco

In the evening, we board the 6:20 pm Expedition train to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival, our private vehicle will transfer you back to Cusco, dropping you off at your hotel at approximately 10:00 pm.

A full day of hiking, history, and unforgettable scenery — the ideal way to experience the Inca Trail in just one day.
