Rainbow Mountain Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Cusco – Quiquijana – Llacto – Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) – Red Valley Viewpoint
angle-down

Early Morning Departure

Your adventure begins at 4:00 a.m. with hotel pick-up in Cusco. Travel south through the Andean highlands in comfortable private transportation, with warm blankets provided for the journey.

Breakfast Stop & Scenic Drive

After approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, we stop for breakfast. We then continue through Cusipata, passing traditional villages, fertile valleys, ancient agricultural terraces, and herds of llamas and alpacas.

Start of the Hike – Llacto

We arrive at Llacto (4,630 m / 15,190 ft), where the hike begins. The trail starts gently through the high Andes, offering impressive views of Mount Ausangate (6,372 m / 20,905 ft). Your guide will explain the mountain’s spiritual importance in Andean culture.

Andean Communities & Culture

Along the route, you’ll encounter local communities who maintain ancestral traditions, herding animals and crafting clothing from fine alpaca wool. Your guide may also introduce you to a few words of Quechua, the region’s ancient language.

Rainbow Mountain Summit

The final stretch includes a steeper ascent to Rainbow Mountain (5,100 m / 16,732 ft). After around 1.5 hours of hiking, enjoy free time at the summit to explore, take photos, and learn about the geological origins of its vibrant colors. Time here ranges from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on conditions.

Red Valley Viewpoint

From Rainbow Mountain, we continue to the Red Valley viewpoint (5,050 m / 16,568 ft). A short 25-minute walk leads to panoramic views of this dramatic and lesser-visited landscape.

Descent & Return to Cusco

We descend for about 1 hour, passing alpaca herds and, if lucky, spotting wild vicuñas. After the hike, we stop for a buffet lunch, then return to Cusco in private transportation with drop-off at your hotel.
