Machu Picchu By Train Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Tambo Machay – Pucamarca
We depart from Cusco early and take private transportation to Tambo Machay. After observing the ruins from a distance, our hiking adventure begins as we ascend steeply, providing us with breathtaking views over the city. Throughout the day, we cross four mild mountain passes, the highest of which reaches 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). Along the way, we pass picturesque alpine lakes and pastoral landscapes where alpacas graze amidst potato fields. Towards the end of the day, we connect with an ancient Inca trail that leads us down to a village filled with stone houses featuring thatched roofs. We camp for the night in the small hamlet of Pucamarca.

Day 2: Puma Marca – Huchuy Qosqo – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
After breakfast, our journey continues as we hike to Huchuy Qosqo, passing through a narrow and enchanting canyon with magnificent views of the Sacred Valley on the other side. After about an additional 1.5 hours of walking, we arrive at the Huchuy Qosqo ruins, a rarely visited ancient Inca site that translates to “Small Cusco.” We have time to explore the ruins and contemplate their historical significance. From here, we embark on a 2.5-hour steep and sometimes slippery descent into the Sacred Valley, ultimately reaching the untouristed village of Lamay for a late lunch.
From Lamay, we journey to Ollantaytambo, the living Inca village, by private car. If time allows, you can explore this charming town with its narrow cobblestone streets and stone structures, or opt to ascend to the Inca ruins above the village (please note there is an additional fee to visit the Ollantaytambo ruins, not included in your Huchuy Qosqo Trek price). In the late afternoon, we travel by train to Aguas Calientes, where we check into our accommodations and enjoy a celebratory dinner.

Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
Today, we rise before dawn to catch the first bus to Machu Picchu. With perfect timing, you may witness the sunrise over this remarkable Inca citadel from the Watchman’s Hut or Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. Our guide will lead a 2-3-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu, and you’ll have the option to explore additional highlights on your own.
For those seeking an extra adventure, you may consider climbing Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain to complete your Machu Picchu experience. Keep in mind that permits are limited and must be reserved at the time of booking. There is an additional cost to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, not included in the price of this trek.
