Important information

Inca Trail Permits & Availability

The Short Inca Trail requires an official government permit. Availability is limited and often sells out months in advance, especially during high season (May to September). We strongly recommend booking early to secure your preferred date.

Passport Requirement

You must bring your original passport, and it must match the one used when booking your permit. This will be checked at the trail entrance and at Machu Picchu.

Physical Level

This trek covers approximately 10 km (6.3 miles) in one day. It includes uphill sections and uneven stone steps. A moderate fitness level is recommended. No technical climbing experience is required.

Altitude Information

The highest point of the hike is approximately 2,720 meters (8,923 ft) at the Sun Gate. Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters (7,972 ft). Spending at least 1–2 days in Cusco before the trek is highly recommended for proper acclimatization.

Weather Conditions

Weather in the Andes can change quickly. Expect warm temperatures during the day and cooler conditions in the early morning and evening. Rain is possible at any time of year, especially from November to March.

Accommodation

You will spend one night in a comfortable 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes (private room with breakfast included).

Luggage Storage

Large suitcases are not allowed on the trail or train. We provide free secure storage in Cusco for your extra belongings.

Optional Mountain Hikes

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets and must be booked in advance. These hikes are done independently unless a private guide is requested.

How difficult is the Short Inca Trail?

It’s considered moderate. The hike is about 10 km (6.3 miles) with uphill sections and stone steps, but it’s manageable for most travelers with a reasonable fitness level.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes. Permits are limited and can sell out months ahead, especially during high season. Early booking is highly recommended.

Can I join if I don’t have hiking experience?

Absolutely. No technical experience is required. If you’re comfortable walking several hours on uneven terrain, you can do it.

What time does the tour start and finish?

Day 1 starts around 4:00 AM in Cusco. You return to Cusco on Day 2 at approximately 7:30 PM.

Will I see Machu Picchu twice?

Yes. You arrive at Machu Picchu in the afternoon of Day 1 via the Sun Gate and return the next morning for a full guided tour.

Is Huayna Picchu included?

No. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain require separate tickets. These must be reserved in advance.

Where do I stay overnight?

You’ll spend one night in a comfortable 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes with breakfast included.

Are meals included?

Yes. The tour includes 2 breakfasts, 1 picnic lunch on the trail, and 1 dinner in Aguas Calientes.

What happens in case of bad weather?

The trail operates in most weather conditions. We recommend proper rain gear, especially during the rainy season.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

Yes. Vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free, and other dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice.
