Important information

The Short Inca Trail 1 Day Hike is a fantastic way to experience a section of the legendary Inca Trail and arrive at the iconic Machu Picchu through the historic Sun Gate. Below is everything you need to know before booking.

Permit Availability

Inca Trail permits are limited and issued by the Peruvian government. Even for the 1-day version, availability can sell out months in advance — especially during high season (May to September). We strongly recommend booking early to secure your spot.

Difficulty Level

This hike is considered moderate.

  • Distance: Approximately 10–12 km (6–7.5 miles)
  • Hiking time: Around 5–7 hours
  • Terrain: Stone-paved Inca paths, stairs, and some uphill sections

A reasonable level of fitness is required, but prior trekking experience is not mandatory.

Altitude

The highest point is around 2,720 meters (8,923 ft) at the Sun Gate. Since the hike is mostly descending toward Machu Picchu, altitude is less challenging than other multi-day treks. However, we recommend spending at least one day in Cusco before the hike to acclimatize.

Weather Conditions

The trail passes through cloud forest, where weather can change quickly.

  • Dry season: April to October (best trekking conditions)
  • Rainy season: November to March (bring proper rain gear)

Temperatures can vary between cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Machu Picchu Access

The 1-Day Inca Trail permit includes entry to Machu Picchu via designated circuits according to park regulations. The experience includes panoramic viewpoints and a guided visit, depending on ticket availability and official rules at the time of booking.

What Makes It Special

  • Walk the final stretch of the Classic Inca Trail
  • Enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate
  • Explore impressive ruins like Wiñay Wayna
  • Experience history, nature, and adventure—all in one day

This tour is ideal for travelers who want the magic of the Inca Trail but have limited time in Peru.
