Day 1 — Puerto Maldonado to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

On arrival in Puerto Maldonado, receive an airport welcome and assistance with the transfer to the Inkaterra facilities for check-in. Continue to the river port to begin the journey into the Amazon.

Board a motorized canoe for the journey along the Madre de Dios River. As Puerto Maldonado recedes, watch the scenery change to tropical rainforest before arriving at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica.
Meet the lodge staff for a brief orientation, settle into your cabaña and enjoy lunch in the main dining room. Take time to rest, enjoy tea or appreciate the surroundings before meeting your Inkaterra guide to discuss the excursions available during your stay.

A guided nature walk is recommended for your first afternoon. Follow forest trails while your guide explains the Amazon Basin ecosystem, its plants and the ways wildlife adapts to the rainforest. Look for kapok trees, strangler figs, tropical plants, birds and insects; sightings depend on natural conditions.

As evening approaches, you may join the Twilight River excursion on the Madre de Dios River. Watch the transition from daytime to nocturnal activity and look along the banks for species such as nightjars, owls, capybaras and caimans, without guaranteed sightings. Day 2 — Amazon Rainforest Excursions

Breakfast is available from 5:30 a.m. for guests wishing to start early. One recommended morning excursion is Lake Sandoval in the Tambopata National Reserve. Travel to the reserve and explore the oxbow lake by canoe with your guide, learning about the ecology of the lake and surrounding forest.

Depending on conditions and luck, look for giant river otters, red howler monkeys, macaws, turtles and other birds and rainforest species. Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for lunch and time to relax. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

In the afternoon, you may visit the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. Climb approximately 29 meters (95 feet) above the forest floor and follow suspension bridges and observation platforms among the treetops. Look for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, sloths and other canopy wildlife. Participation and timing depend on the day’s program and local conditions.
If the schedule and conditions allow, there may be an opportunity to remain at an observation tower as sunset approaches. Back at the lodge, relax or attend an available nature presentation. Dinner begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by a second night at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica.
